After several years and extensive input from BikeWest, the Birmingham St Parklet is under construction. This will include a separated bike path through the parklet which will connect the future Birmingham St protected bike lane connecting to Yarraville Station and Pentland Parade protected bike lane connecting to Seddon.

BikeWest is advising Maribyrnong Council on the deveoopment of their Bike Sports Strategy. We are very excited about the opportunities for people of all ages and abilities, especially school kids. We hope the strategy will be endorsed by council before December 2022.

The current budget allocation fails to address community needs and expectations for new and improved cycling infrastructure and amenity and lacks vision and forethought in demonstrating leadership on climate, health, environment, and Covid-19 related impacts and opportunities.
Time to put in your responses to the Maribyrnong Councils 4-year Community Plan and annual budget! Feel free to use the document below, amend it to suit your needs, or submit your own!
Maribyrnong City Council is expected to commence improvement works along the Maribyrnong River edge between Hopkins Street and Shepherd’s Bridge in the week commencing 23 November 2020, with the upgrade to continue until mid-2022.
The $12 million refurbishment of the riverside includes a 230m long timber boardwalk, with lower landings and a pontoon for small vessels and mooring for recreational boats. A wide promenade and shared path will run along the river bank, along with extensive planting, seating, lighting, and sheltered picnic and barbecue spaces.
Heritage Victoria approved the project this month after six years of planning and consultation which began in 2014 with the development of the Footscray River Edge Master Plan. State Government and Council are joint funding the project.
How this will impact you
The construction area will be fenced and detours will be in place for pedestrians and cyclists along the river’s edge between Hopkins Street and Shepherd’s Bridge while works are underway. This will allow pedestrians and cyclists to continue their journey along the Maribyrnong River.
Thank you for your co-operation as we undertake these works. A stroll along the Maribyrnong is already a favourite past-time for residents and visitors to the city but enhancements following the refurbishment of the riverside promise to make it the jewel of the inner west.
If you require further information on this project please contact the City Design team on 9688 0200. For any issues arising on site please contact Charles Mazaba, Senior Project Manager via 9091 5633.
There are going to be some sewer works in the Footscray/Seddon area just south of Footscray City Primary School starting November 16th and expected to last for 2 weeks. There will be some lane closures but we have been informed the cycle lanes will remain open with localised detours around access holes.

It’s council election time across the West and we have reached out to all prospective councillors in Brimbank, Hobsons Bay, Maribyrnong, Melton, Moonee Valley and Wyndham to see what they would do to improve their areas for cyclists.
So far we’ve had 48 responses but if you would like to hear from a candidate that hasn’t got back to us then feel free to give them a nudge!
